how to read your drawings
a simple guide to understanding your kabn® plan set.
your plan set is organized just like the drawings builders and building departments use every day. each sheet focuses on a different part of your home so it’s easy to review and discuss with your builder.
what’s included: foundation (insulated slab), floor plans, roof framing, elevations, building sections, details, and separate electrical, plumbing, and hvac sheets — everything you typically need for permitting and construction.
floor plans
• show the layout — walls, windows, doors, fixtures, and dimensions
• solid lines = walls; dashed lines = items above (beams, lofts)
• room names and measurements show space and flow
• dimensions are to the framing unless otherwise noted
foundation plan
• insulated slab-on-grade with reinforcement and layout notes
• stub-outs shown for plumbing and conduit locations
• insulation layers and vapour protection for energy-efficient performance
elevations
• exterior views: front, back, and sides
• wall heights, roof slopes, and exterior finishes called out
• grade lines, window heights, and cladding noted for clarity
building sections
• cut-through views from slab to roof
• how floors, walls, and ceilings connect
• insulation and air-seal details for comfort and efficiency
roof framing plan
• layout of trusses or rafters, ridges, and supports
• roof slopes, overhangs, and bearing points
• member sizes and spacing for coordination with engineering
details
• close-up drawings of high-performance wall, roof, and slab assemblies
• designed for low-energy, passive-inspired construction
• can be simplified locally to meet code or budget needs
electrical, plumbing + hvac sheets
• separate sheets for each system (not a combined mep)
• outlet and lighting layouts, plumbing fixture locations, hvac placement
• final routing and equipment sizing are completed by local trades
symbols + callouts
• symbols and tags link between sheets (e.g., window numbers match the schedule)
• arrows and circles point to specific notes or details
• standard construction abbreviations are used throughout
scales
• most plans and elevations: ¼″ = 1′–0″ (1:50 metric)
• sections and details may be larger for clarity
• always check the noted scale before measuring
tips
• review the entire set — each sheet supports the others
• print full-size 24" × 36" (arch d) for accurate scale; 11" × 17" is fine for review
• colours or line weights may highlight key details
